Miss Hannah Wolstenholme
Dates: 1863 - 1948
Biographical Account: Hannah Wolstenholme was born in 1863 in Hope, Derbyshire. She was the daughter of John Wolstenholme, a farmer of 52 acres, and Jane Wolstenholme. Hannah made her sampler when she was nine years old, probably whilst attending the local school in Grindleford. At this point she was living in Great Barlow in Derbyshire with her parents, three other relations and one servant. In 1891, at the age of 28, Hannah married Elijah Davis, a farmer from Chesterfield. They lived together at Crow Hole, Barlow, in Derbyshire, with 2 servants. In 1896 Hannah and Elijah had their first daughter together and seven years later, in 1903, the couple had another daughter. It was Hannah's youngest daughter who inherited her sampler upon her death in January 1948, later donating it to the museum in 1985 "hoping that it might be of interest to someone".
