Hullmandel was born in London, the son of French parents. He trained as an artist but after meeting Johann Alois Senefelder, the inventor of lithography, set up as a lithographer in 1818. From his printers on Great Marlborough Street, London, he was responsible for a number of advancements in lithography including lithotinting and colour printing and in 1824 wrote a book on the subject, ‘The Art of Drawing on Stone’.

In 1845 he set up a new lithographic company in partnership with Joseph Fowell Walton (1812- around 1863) and printed and published under the name ‘Hullmandel and Walton’.
