Angelo Alessandri (1854-1931) was an artist from Venice. He trained at Venice’s Academy of Art and probably made a living by painting picturesque scenes for the city's tourists. He was interested in recording Venice’s architecture and was a friend of Giacomo Boni, an innovative architectural preservationist in the city. This frienship brought Alessandri into contact with John Ruskin in 1876, and Ruskin, seeing ‘the soul of Carpaccio’ (an early renaissance Venetian artist) in him, started to tutor him by teaching him to copy Venetian art and to study from the watercolours of JMW Turner.

Ruskin commissioned copies of paintings by Italian artists from Alessandri, including works by Carpaccio, Tintoretto, Perugino and Botticelli. He used them for his research, later putting them in Sheffield’s Ruskin Collection. Ruskin used others to illustrate his lecture series, Ariadne Florentina. Alessandri also painted records of architecture and painting in Venice, Verona and Rome for Ruskin.

Later on, Alessandri became a Professor of Art at the Academy in Venice where he was first taught.
