Mr Joseph Wood
Dates: 1858 - 1938
Biographical Account: Joseph was the son of Ann and William Wood of 136 Pond Street, Sheffield. He later lived on Darnall Road, and was a foreman at Edgar Allens, in charge of the Cupola Furnace, which remelted pig iron for castings. He started running around 1878, and is believed to have run for Sheffield United Harriers. He won many prizes and trophies, and his wife Annie often accompanied him to track events. After he was accidently spiked by someone else's running shoes, he stopped running and starting training other runners, including his daughter and son. His daughter won prizes in the Sunday School races in High Hazels Park as part of the Whit Sings.
