Sydney Wilkinson (1871-1946) was born in London and studied at Brighton School of Art, London Polytechnic and the City & Guilds Technical Institute. After working as a designer with a London firm, he moved to Sheffield and set up a studio on Fargate, before moving on again to work with a Birmingham manufacturer.
After the First World War he returned to Sheffield and gained a teaching post in 'art metalwork' at Sheffield College of Arts & Crafts. He eventually became Principal until his retirement in 1936. Wilkinson lived in a cottage in Dore and became a long term member of Sheffield Artcrafts Guild.
