Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen was a painter and printmaker. He was born in 1859 in Lausanne, Switzerland. He began his career as a Technical Draughtsman.
In the late 1800s Steinlen moved to the artists' neighbourhood of Montmartre, where he became friends with Toulouse-Lautrec. He became an illustrator for the papers "Le Chat Noir" and "Le Mirliton".
Steinlen was politically opposed to the First World War. He designed many posters and made many lithographs of people during the war.
He died in 1923.
