Samuel Staniforth Ltd
Biographical Account: Samuel Staniforth started his company in 1864 as a manufacturer of the raw materials needed for the cutlery industry. By 1880 he was occupying the Central Cutlery Forge in Carver Street, where he had installed steam-powered knife forging machines to make blades from steel sheet. These machines removed the need for hand forging the cutlery. In the 1940s the company expanded its production into military and trade knives, which kept them afloat during the difficult years of the late 1970s and 1980s. Samuel Staniforth underwent a management buyout in 2000 and in 2005 they moved from its city centre location to Smithfield Works, Halfway, where they still make trade and butchers knives stamped with their famous BULL trademark.
