Ellen Shearstone
Dates: 1862-1939
Biographical Account: Ellen Shearstone was born in the parish of Dyers Hill, in Sheffield, in 1862. Her father was Aaron Shearstone, a silver chaser, and Emma Shearstone (née Barnes). The 1871 Census shows Ellen aged 8, living at 153 Lord Street, with her father, mother and three siblings aged between 1 and 6 years. By the time she was 18, Ellen was working as a Wesleyan pupil teacher, living at 12 Hodgson Street, Sheffield, with her parents and 7 siblings, all aged between 1 and 16. In 1891 Ellen was working as an assistant school teacher, living on Back Street in Treeton, Sheffield. The 1901 Census shows Ellen aged 38, working as a school teacher and living at 76 Hague Lane, in Park, Sheffield, with her widowed mother, Emma, and 5 siblings aged 19-26. In 1903 Ellen married John Dovey S Thompson in Sheffield. By 1911 Ellen and John were living with Emma at Brampton en le Morthen in Rotherham, Yorkshire, where John was working as a colliery winding engineman.
