Simon Roberts
Dates: English, born 1974
Biographical Account:

Simon Roberts was born in 1974 in Croyden. He studied Human Geography at the University of Sheffield but chose to pursue a career in photography. He specialises in large-scale colour photography and landscape work.

For the series ‘We English’, Roberts travelled around England with his family in a camper van taking photographs of the Yorkshire countryside, beaches, caravan parks and people at leisure. For one photo in the Yorkshire Dales, he took the picture standing ontop of his camper van to get a higher vantage point. Although he did not inform the people in the photograph he was taking their picture until afterwards, he found out later that the Bradford Couple had been visiting that same spot for many years.

Simon has also made many other series: ‘Pierdom’ looks at British pleasure piers; ‘Motherland’ features photos taken in Russia in 2004 and 2005; ‘After the Typhoon’ documents the destruction of the 2013 typhoon which hit the Philippines; more recently, ‘Urban Parks’focuses on green spaces in cities around the world.

Simon currently works in Brighton and frequently lectures at IED Madrid on the European Master of Art Course, and as an Honorary Professor of Geography at the University of Nottingham.
