Robert F Mosley
Dates: 1841-1921
Biographical Account: R. F. Mosley & Co. Ltd, manufacturer of cutlery and silverware, was listed at Portland Works from 1871. Mosley's was the first firm in the world to produce stainless steel cutlery. Harry Brearley turned to Mosley's in 1914 to assist in the trialling of his new 'rustless' steel. Stainless steel was born and the knives were marked 'RUSTNORSTAIN' . Portland Works, near Bramall Lane, was constructed in the 1870s as Sheffield’s first purpose built cutlery works, and today still houses the workshops of several metalworkers.
