John Piper

Biographical Account:

John Egerton Christmas Piper was born on 13 December 1903. Piper spent most of his life living in Fawley Bottom in Buckinghamshire.

 

From a young age Piper had an interest in art and would go exploring on his bike, and would draw and paint pictures of old churches and monuments on the way. He started making his own guide books and later went on to write several Shell Guides.

 

Piper was a 20th-century English painter and printmaker of architecture, landscape and abstract compositions. He was also a designer for stained glass windows and for the theatre. During the Second World War Piper was appointed Official War Artist.

 

He died on 28 June 1992.
