Francesco Marcaldi
Dates: Italian, active 1570 - 1600
Biographical Account: Marcaldi was possibly a political or diplomatic secretary and is known to have travelled around the major cities of Italy in the late 1500s. He seemed to have access to many important and wealthy people in Italy and Europe, including politicians, religious leaders and diplomats. He also had access to documents relating to the political status, population and defences of countries and territories associated with the Venetian Empire and others such as the Ottoman Empire and Spain. He used this access to transcribe and present attractively bound editions of these documents to many European dignitaries, of which the manuscript in the Ruskin Collection (CGSG03632) is one. This copy he gave to the Spanish Ambassador.
