Luis de Morales

Biographical Account:

Luis de Morales was born in 1512, in Badajoz, in Spain, he stayed here for most of his life, occasionally travelling for commissions. He was greatly influenced by the Renaissance masters, such as Raphael (1483 – 1520). He painted many religious subjects, including many representations of the Madonna and Child and the Passion.


Morales was the first Spanish artist considered to be the greatest native Mannerist painter of Spain. His contemporaries called him ‘El Divino’, the divine, because of his talent of capturing spiritual and realism in his paintings.


He died on 9 May 1586.
