Master of the Die
Dates: German, active 1532
Biographical Account:

The identity of the ‘Master of the Die’ is unknown, so the engraver is known by the symbol of the gaming die, that is found as a ‘signature’ on all his engravings.

All that is known about the Master of the Die is that he was working in Italy in the mid 1500s and that he studied under the engraver Marcantonio Raimondi (1480-1534), who specialised in engraving copies of paintings. Some art historians have suggested that he may have been Raimondi’s son.
