William Hayes
Dates: British, 1729 - 1799
Biographical Account:

Hayes worked with his large family to make a living from illustrating the birds of Robert Childe’s private menagerie at Osterley Park, Middlesex. He supplemented his income by working as a postmaster and by producing embossed and framed versions of his illustrations as decorative ornaments.

According to contemporary records, both Hayes and his wife along with at least six of his 21 children worked on the illustrations, but owning to the size of his family, and the disabilities suffered by many of them, the family lived in great poverty.
