Gainsford & Nicholson
Biographical Account: The elephant’s head mark of Robert Gainsford was registered at Sheffield Assay Office on 28 July 1808. Gainsford was listed as a ‘plate worker’ with premises at Eyre Street, in the centre of Sheffield. By around 1810 Gainsford had entered into partnership with Thomas Nicholson. Thomas was the son of Samuel Nicholson, former partner of Tudor and Leader, one of the leading early manufacturers of Old Sheffield Plate.
