Fratelli Alinari
Dates: Italian, founded 1854
Biographical Account:

The company Fratelli Alinari (‘Alinari Brothers’ in English) was founded in 1854 in Florence, by 3 brothers, Leopoldo (1832-1865) and Giuseppe (1836-1890) as photographers, and Romualdo (1830-1890) as administrator. The company quickly achieved international recognition for their photographs of the landscape and buildings of Tuscan cities such as Florence, Pisa and Sienna, before specialising also in the photographic reproduction of paintings. As well as selling their own works, Fratelli Alinari received prestigious commissions for sets of images, including a number from royalty, such as Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband.

The company continued to be family run and expanded greatly through the later 1800s and 1900s, experimenting with new photographic technologies and increasing the size of their publishing business. The company still exists, running a huge photographic archive and making available thousands of historic and contemporary images.
