William Maw Egley
Dates: British, 1826 - 1916
Biographical Account:

William Maw Egley was born in London in 1826, the son of the portrait painter and miniaturist William Egley (1798-1870). He was taught to paint by his father at the early age of 14.

He began by drawing literary illustrations of Molière and Shakespeare, and later painted backgrounds for William Powell Frith (1819-1909). This experience influenced his own work and he turned to painting domestic genre scenes rich in costume and historical references.  He died in February 1916.
