Merlyn Evans

Biographical Account:

Merlyn Evans was a painter and printmaker, born in Cardiff in 1910. He grew up in Glasgow and in 1927 went to study at the Glasgow School of Art, where he started producing abstract paintings. He subsequently went on to study at the Royal College of Art, whilst in London he became a follower of Surrealism.


In 1938 he moved to South Africa, where he taught in Durban. Then during the war he became an engineer with the South African Army. He returned to England in 1946 and started experimenting with printmaking. He worked with a variety of engraving techniques producing abstract and geometric works.


He died in 1973.
