John Henry Dearle

Biographical Account: John Henry Dearle was born on the 22 August 1859 in London. Between 1872 and 1900 he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. In 1878 Dearle became assistant tapestry apprentice to Morris & Co, later becoming responsible for training all tapestry apprentices. He worked closely with William Morris on designing fabric patterns and floral backgrounds and towards the late 1880s he was designing repeat patterns for wallpapers, textiles and also large scale embroideries. In 1890 he was appointed head designer and in 1896, after the death of William Morris, Dearle was appointed Art Director of Morris & Co.
