Leslie Cole
Dates: British, 1910 - 1976
Biographical Account:

Leslie Cole was born in Swindon, Wiltshire. He studied at Swindon Art School and The Royal College of Art, London, receiving a diploma in mural decoration, fabric painting and lithography. In 1937 he began teaching at Hull College of Art.

In 1940 Cole requested work as a war artist but was turned down at first. He persisted and was finally sent to Malta in 1942 as an official war artist. Then in 1944 he was sent to France, followed by Greece, Germany and the Far East. He became one of Britain’s most productive war artists.

After the war he moved to London and taught at Central School, and Brighton College of Art. Nothing after 1946, however, matched the intensity of his wartime experience.
