Rawdon Lubbock Brown

Biographical Account:

Rawdon Brown was an English historian who lived most of his life in Venice. He specialised in the history of Italy in relation to British politics and culture. Between 1864 and his death almost 20 years later he concentrated on a six-volume work ,’A Calendar of State Papers and Manuscripts relating to English Affairs existing in the Archives of Venice and Northern Italy’, which was finally finished posthumously.


Brown met John Ruskin in Venice. They became close friends and Brown often carried out or shared research with him.
