James Barry

Biographical Account:

James Barry was born on 11 October 1741 in Cork, Ireland. From a young age he wanted to become a history painter.


Between 1765 and 1771 Barry travelled around Europe; to Paris, Rome, Florence, Bologne and Venice, where he was inspired by Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian and Leonardo da Vinci.


Barry became Professor of Painting at Royal Academy in London in 1782, but was expelled in 1799 for his eccentric lectures and his public attacks on the behaviour of his fellow members.


He died on 22 February 1806 in London and is buried at St Paul's Cathedral.
