This sampler is embroidered with the alphabet, numbers and a biblical verse, all seperated by various decorative borders. It was made by Hannah Wolstenholme in February 1872, when she was nine years old. The text in the middle of the sampler has been taken from Matthew 19:14, although Hannah has made her own addition at the end of the verse. It reads: 'Suffer little children to come/unto me and forbid them not/for of such is the kingdom of/heaven + Time how short.' In keeping with many late nineteenth-century samplers a symmetrical pattern of birds and flowers decorates the bottom of the sampler.
