Edward Lear spent most of his life travelling, producing many watercolour sketches and documenting his travels through journals, which he later published. In this painting Lear uses watercolour to explore the reflections of the mountains in the water. The scene was painted in Greece near the ancient city of Chalkis. Lear limits his pallet to soft washes of blue and yellow.
