This pencil drawing of Flight Lieutenant J.R. Drummond was composed during the Second World War. Many military personnel and high ranking officers were drawn rather than photographed during the war. The War Artists Advisory Committee wanted to document the ‘feel of the war’ and felt the camera could not interpret the emotional effect of the sheer scale and power of war. Thomas Monnington made many pencil drawing of RAF personnel but mainly focused on aerial views of the war, which was something that hadn’t been done before by the War Artists Advisory Committee.
