This painting is probably part of a series of three works depicting the Passion of Christ which refer to the events leading to his crucifixion. In this work, Christ is being taunted by the figures around him who have placed a crown of thorns upon his head. Giulio Cesare Procaccini has used dramatic lighting and flashes of bright colour to enhance the emotion of the scene.
