In 1964, Bradford-born David Hockney moved to LA. He became infatuated with the Southern Californian culture and landscape. This was reflected in his work, which depicted many of the hallmarks of the laid back, cool lifestyle. This photograph depicting Californians at leisure playing tennis in Berkeley is one of the images by Hockney published in the portfolio 'Twenty Photographic Pictures' in 1976. Hockney had long been exploring the relationship between painting and photography, and the publication of this portfolio cemented his status as a contributor to the development of British colour photography.
