Marinus Adrianus was a member of the Koekkoek artist family and specialised in painting Romantic landscape scenes. This wooded landscape is not topographically accurate but from the artist’s imagination. It may have been inspired by Marinus Adrianus’ visits to the Rhine Valley. At the bottom left of the painting a traveller on horseback is talking to a man riding a bullock cart with his dog on a country lane. Sunset appears to be falling over the castle set on the hilltop in the distance.
