Monticelli was a French painter whose bright and bold style inspired Van Gogh to change his colour palette. This view of the iconic San Marco square in Venice was probably painted during his Italian trip in 1849-1850. A common subject for painters on their Grand Tour, the Piazzetta has been depicted differently through time. In this work, Monticelli uses blurry brush strokes to emphasise the vibrant, jewel-like tones of the sunset rather than the buildings or passer-by.
