Throughout his long career Beaton was fascinated with glamour and high society. He launched his career in the 1920s with his portrayals of the 'Bright Young People'. They were known for their disregard for social conventions, elaborate fancy dress parties and drunken behaviour. The press enthusiastically covered their antics. Beaton was a member of this group of aristocrats and socialites which included the Mitford sisters and Evelyn Waugh. In this unusual self portrait, Beaton is barely visible through a tangle of pipes.
