In the Second World War Anthony Gross was appointed as an Official War Artist. During this time he produced etchings, oil and watercolour paintings of the English coastal defences and troops preparing for war. This work shows a slightly lighter side of war, some soldiers fish whilst others stand to attention. Barrage balloons can also be seen floating above the pier defending against enemy planes.
