David Roberts is well-known for his depiction of religious buildings. This painting’s title identifies the location pictured as the cathedral of Our Lady of Reims, where the kings of France were once crowned. The composition offers a dramatic contrast between the vibrantly coloured stained glass windows and the darker gothic columns and arches. The large scale of the cathedral is underlined by the small size of the groups of people at the foreground, three priests on the left and six pious peasants on the right.
