David Roberts was originally a theatre designer, but his success as a landscape painter enabled him to give up theatre work in 1830. From this time onwards, Roberts travelled widely in search of new and interesting subjects. He was one of the first British artists to travel to Spain, Morocco and the Near East. He particularly enjoyed the architecture and landscape of Italy and painted many images of it, including The Church of Santa Maria della Salute. This is a Roman Catholic Church in Venice, which took 56 years to build and was finally completed in 1687. The architect Baldassare Longhena described this church as, ‘strange, worthy and beautiful…’
