The composition of this work feels almost like a photograph. It shows a fleeting moment of a passing horse and cart travelling down a side street – only parts of the buildings on either side can be seen. Sylvia Gosse predominantly painted scenes, like this, from everyday life. Gosse lived in London and also had a house in Dieppe in northern France. The title of this painting suggests that it was probably made during her journey back home to England.
