J M W Turner visited Weathercote Cave in about 1808 and again in 1816. On his second visit he said the view was slightly spoilt by ‘miserably wet weather’. This watercolour shows a view looking up from the cave entrance.
Turner has used his imagination to create a more dramatic effect, for it is impossible to see the top of the waterfall from this viewpoint. The brown tones of the rocks and foliage are highlighted by the bright white gouache of the waterfall.
