This painting, which is attributed to the Pre-Raphaelite artist Charles Fairfax Murray, forms part of a pair with the work titled Guitar Player. The dreamy, slightly melancholy figure is typical of Pre-Raphaelite images. Murray was a great admirer and collector of Italian art, and the dress of the musician may reference Italian representations of the Muses from Classical mythology.
