This painting is one of Breton’s early views of the countryside around Courrières. The red roofs and church spire of the village can be seen in the background. Jules Breton studied in Ghent, Antwerp and Paris before returning to his native Courrières in northern France in the early 1850s. He began his career painting scenes from history, but when he arrived in Courrières he began to paint more realistic images of nature and rural peasant scenes.
