Mornington Crescent is a street in Camden, an area in north London only five minutes from Frank Auerbach's studio. He created many sketches of Mornington Crescent during the 1960s at which time it was being modernised. He knew the location well and recorded what he saw on a daily basis.
Auerbach considered drawing an essential part of his work, some of his painting may have required as many as 200 sketches. He would then take these back to his studio which would help him work out the composition. The drawings and painting of Mornington Crescent make reference to the landscape, dominated by the scaffolding and hoardings.
