Frank Auerbach painted over 70 portraits and studies of Juliet Yardley Mills (JYM). He first discovered her at the Sidcup School of Art in 1957, although she didn’t become his main model until 1963. He was well known for laboriously painting and reworking, thickly applying paint with energetic and expressive strokes.
During the early 1960s, he also painted his close friend, Estella West (EOW) she shared sitting duties with JYM for over 14 years, but the two models never met.
