Professor Charles Patten paid particular attention to recording when and where his specimens were caught. This specimen was collected from Ballykill Bay in County Galway on the 4th of April 1900. This information is invaluable to those studying how species distribution patterns have changed over the years. In addition, the specimens provide an extra tier of information, such as body chemistry, genetics and growth patterns, which can be used to determine how animals today compare with animals in the past.
