John Armstrong developed an interest in nature at an early age, depicting plants and leaves in a meticulous way. As his style developed, however, instead of portraying the outward appearance of an object, he tried to capture the essence within. His works have a Surrealist emphasis and show the influence of Giorgio de Chirico. Armstrong studied at St John's Wood School of Art and later designed film and stage sets, book illustrations and murals. He was also made an Official War Artist in 1940.
