This small portrait has been meticulously painted, barely a brushstroke is visible. Lowinsky only used his friends or professional models in his portraits. Cicely Hamilton was a passionate supporter of women’s rights and campaigned for women to get the vote. As Cicely was a friend of Lowinsky’s, he would have been very familiar with her personality. In this portrait he manages to convey her quiet determination.
