Francis Cadell was mainly based in Edinburgh, but often escaped to the Western Isles for some peace and quiet. He was inspired by the special light and atmosphere on these Scottish islands. He painted outside in the landscape, which give his works an air of spontaneity and confidence.
Cadell was one of four artists known as the Scottish Colourists. This group were heavily influenced by the Fauvist painters, who were bold with their use of colour and energetic brushstrokes.
