In this print Nevinson has captured the aftermath of a bombardment, the quiet troops retreating along the endless road surrounded by a bleak and destroyed landscape. Nevinson also painted this scene a year before making this lithograph. The officials from the War Artists Advisory Committee requested that he changed the traffic on the original painting, as he originally showed the vehicles on the wrong side of the road.
