Shells and gunfire have torn up No Man’s Land, the unoccupied area between the two sides during battle. You can see the devastating impact the First World War had on the landscape in the burnt trees and churned up mud.
Like other Futurist artists Christopher Nevinson theoretically approved of war as a vital part of the Machine Age. After experiencing it first hand as an ambulance driver, he changed his mind. He has used Cubist techniques to express the turmoil of the scene.
