This etching shows an area of Flanders in northern Belgium during the First World War. During the war the allies suffered their greatest loss of life in Flanders and much of its landscape was devastated. C R W Nevinson worked as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross and the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War and was deeply affected by his experiences. He produced many paintings and drawings based on what he had witnessed.
