This painting of Rabat in Morocco is likely to have been painted during a visit to Morocco between February and March in 1933 with his long term partner Helen Maitland Anrep (1885-1965). Anrep met Roger Fry in 1925; she left her husband and family and spent the rest of her life with him. This warm and relaxed scene shows the change in Fry’s later work. After the horrors of the First World War he returned to a more representational style, with a sense of order and simplicity.
