Walter Richard Sickert was a German-British painter born in 1860 and one of the founders of the Camden Town Group. This work depicts houses and trees in Chagford, Devon, which he visited in the summer of 1915. Like many of Sickert’s works, the painting looks impressionistic and unfinished. Thin daubs of paint are applied directly to the wood panel, which remains visible in several areas. Sickert chose an unusual perspective for this painting, with the large side of a house in the foreground occupying much of the space.
