Arthur William Devis mainly specialised in historical and military paintings, but here he has portrayed two young girls. This painting is typical of 18th century portraiture, often including a dog, symbolising faithfulness. In this scene the older sister is depicted nurturing her younger sister. During this time the state of childhood was idealised and cherished.
